Fort Lauderdale, FL — … As mail ballots reach voters across South Florida, two new reports are exposing serious cracks in Debbie Wasserman Schultz's campaign.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus declined to endorse Wasserman Schultz, a stunning break from a longtime ally. Elijah Manley, a 27-year-old public school teacher and openly gay progressive, is running to become the first openly gay member of Congress elected from Florida.
Wasserman Schultz is also facing scrutiny for falsely listing the Broward County Democratic Black Caucus as an endorser on her campaign website, the same organization that publicly urged her not to run in FL-20 in the first place.
According to BocaNewsNow.com, the page was quietly taken down after the Caucus publicly denied endorsing her for this race and demanded an apology, calling the move an "egregious political ploy" and conduct "unbecoming of someone who is seeking the trust of the people."
"These stories reveal a campaign that feels entitled to the support of communities Debbie Wasserman Schultz has taken for granted," Manley said. "You cannot claim an endorsement from a Black Democratic organization that never gave you one for this seat. Trust has to be earned, not fabricated, and voters deserve honesty from anyone asking to represent them."
Florida's 20th Congressional District has elected Black representatives for more than three decades. Wasserman Schultz entered the race after Republican redistricting dismantled her previous district and over the public objections of Black Democratic leaders across Broward County.
"Our communities will speak for ourselves," Manley continued. "This district has elected Black leadership for over thirty years, and it deserves a representative who tells the truth to earn that trust, not one who manufactures it. Mail ballots are already out, and voters now have the power to decide who actually earned their support."
