Elijah Manley for Congress Campaign Statement on the Indictment of Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — A federal grand jury in Miami has indicted Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick for stealing more than $5 million in FEMA disaster relief funds, laundering the proceeds, and also using that money to support her 2021 congressional campaign.

Elijah Manley, candidate for Congress in Florida’s 20th District, shared his thoughts shortly after the news broke.

“Today’s indictment is a sad moment for the people of Florida’s 20th Congressional District. I am disappointed in the Congresswoman for abusing the power she was given and instead used it to enrich herself and her family. The people of FL-20 are ready to move past this era of fraud, corruption, and distractions.”

Federal prosecutors say the case centers on an inflated repayment claim filed through a family-owned health care company. Investigators have explained that millions were then routed through several accounts and used in part to support past campaign spending.

Elijah noted that the people of this district have been asking for real transparency and stability for a long time.

"We have families in this district working two and three jobs, trying to make rent, trying to take care of their kids. They cannot afford to be represented by someone facing serious federal charges. They deserve accountability and someone who shows up for them every single day."

Elijah Manley is available for interviews and welcomes questions from the press.
